The church of the Virgin Mary stands on a hill about a hundred and fifty metres northwest of Koreti village in Akhmeta Municipality. The building is rectangular in plan, about eight metres by five and a half, laid of hewn stone, though its shapes are irregular.

The building is badly damaged. Only the west wall and traces of a semicircular apse survive, so the date of construction cannot be narrowed down from the building itself: the site is assigned to the Middle Ages, the broad span from the 4th to the 18th century.

The one surviving detail is worth attention: a narrow rectangular doorway is cut in the west wall, set in cleanly hewn shirimi, the local volcanic tuff. The stone is easy to recognise by its light tone and turns up regularly in Kakhetian buildings.

💡 Tip

  • Ruins on a hill northwest of the village
  • A doorway of hewn shirimi, the local tuff
  • The west wall and traces of the apse survive
