The mosque stands in Koreti, one of the villages of the Pankisi gorge, about half a kilometre from the local Christian church. The proximity of mosque and church is ordinary for Pankisi and describes the make up of the local population well.
The Pankisi gorge is part of Akhmeta Municipality and stretches along the Alazani north of the town. Kists live here, descendants of settlers from mountain Chechnya and Ingushetia, alongside Georgians and other neighbours. Further up the gorge Batsara begins with the yew groves of the reserve.
Closed clothing is expected, with shoulders and knees covered by men and women alike. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
