The Virgin Mary church stands in Bakilovani, a small village in the foothills of the Akhmeta area. The church is a village one, without annexes and with the modest yard usual for the area.
Bakilovani neighbours Damasti and Sakobiano, and all three villages lie along the same line of foothills above the Alazani plain. A Marian dedication is the most frequent in Kakheti, so such churches appear in nearly every village. Slopes, hayfields and forest edges surround it.
Modest clothing is expected, with shoulders and knees covered. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
