The church of Saint Nino stands in the central part of Matani. Barely two hundred metres away lies the chapel of the Virgin belonging to the same village: the two are easily seen in turn.
Saint Nino is considered the enlightener of Georgia, and dedications to her are found across the country, while the principal place of her veneration, Bodbe monastery, stands far from here near Sighnaghi in southern Kakheti. For Matani, with about nine church sites, such pairs within walking distance are ordinary: the village stretches along the river and its buildings remain in different parts.
The doors are opened during daylight, though for a village church this is a habit rather than a schedule. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women, and speak quietly on the grounds.
