The church is dedicated to Saint Barbara, called Barbare in Georgia. It stands in the built-up part of Matani, on a lane named after Kaikhosro Cholokashvili, a Kakhetian military and public figure who came from these parts.
Matani lies in the foothills of the Akhmeta municipality, at the entrance to the Pankisi gorge, and stretches along them for several kilometres. The village holds more than a dozen sanctuaries, scattered along its whole length: a kilometre and a half to the north stands the Trinity church, and further south several more church sites.
Of all the Matani churches this one is the handiest for a short visit: it stands in the built-up part, by an ordinary street, and is easy to reach. The rules are those of any working church: covered shoulders and knees, quiet inside. If you plan to see several sanctuaries of the village, start here and move north.
