The church of Saint Nicholas stands near Akhshani, south-west of Akhmeta. Its name also carries another toponym, Arashenda, but the village of Arashenda lies some forty kilometres to the south, in quite another part of Kakheti, so navigate by the coordinates.
Saint Nicholas, Nikoloz in Georgian, is venerated as the patron of travellers and seafarers; churches of his in this run also stand in Lalisquri west of Telavi and in Bodbiskhevi in the south of the region. Akhshani itself holds two more church buildings, including the Gorisjvari church on a rise.
The church keeps no fixed schedule and can be approached freely. It stands away from the main road. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women.
