A parish church of the prophet Elijah. In Georgia his feast is bound up with mountains and weather: the prophet is venerated as master of thunder and rain, and churches of his name were often raised where the harvest depended on rainfall.
The Alazani valley below Telavi is exactly such a place: this is vine-growing land, and the difference between a wet year and a dry one shows at once. Akhshani lies west of Telavi and the church of Elijah stands in the upper part of the village. Besides it Akhshani holds two more churches, of the Saviour and Kashveti. The century of building is not established.
Of the three village churches this is the only one not locked between services, so you can look in almost any time. Dress modestly, women wear a headscarf, and keep quiet inside.
