The church bears the name of John the Baptist: in Georgian natlismtsemeli, the one who gives baptism. The dedication reads straight from the name, and no second qualifier goes with it.
Akhalsopeli translates as new village, and several places in Georgia carry that name, so it is best to rely on the coordinates. This village lies in eastern Kakheti, between Kvareli and Gurjaani, and stretches from south to north for several kilometres. It holds four sanctuaries: besides this church there is an unnamed sakdari, a salotsavi of Saint George and another church of the same dedication.
There is no fixed schedule of services at the church, but the village is busy and it is usually possible to step inside. Dress as for any church, and keep quiet in the yard. The four sanctuaries stretch along the road for about five kilometres, so walking between them takes a while and driving is easier.
