The church is dedicated to Saint George, and in Akhalsopeli that is the second such dedication: a salotsavi of the same name stands in the centre of the village. The easiest way to tell them apart is by type and location: there a place of prayer, here a parish church.
This is the southernmost of the four sanctuaries of the village. Akhalsopeli stretches from south to north for about five kilometres, and all its churches stand along a single road. The village lies in eastern Kakheti, between Kvareli and Gurjaani, among the vineyards of the plain.
There is no fixed schedule of services, but the village is lively and it is usually possible to step inside. The usual rules apply: covered shoulders and knees, quiet. Walking between the four churches takes a while, so driving is wiser, starting from the south and working up the road.
