The church of Saint Barbara stands near Saruso. Saint Barbara, Barbare in Georgian, is widely venerated in Kakheti: churches of her name in the area number six, the others standing in Chandari, Shashiani, Pkhoveli, Cheremi and Bakurtsikhe.
The name of this church also carries a second toponym, Gavazi, although that village lies apart. Such a discrepancy occurs three times here: similar names are carried by the Tavtsminda church of Saint George in Akhalsopeli and by church ruins in its surroundings. All three most likely preserve the memory of an old parish affiliation.
A village church may keep no fixed schedule; service times are learned on site. The church stands away from the village. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women.
