The church of Saint George stands in Samtatskaro. The name of the village reads as three springs: sami is three, tskaro a spring, and in the arid south of Kakheti such a name speaks for itself, since water was always the chief asset here.
The village lies south-east of Dedoplistskaro, by the edge of the Shiraki steppe, where the vineyards give way to a level horizon and sparse trees. The landscape here is nothing like the postcard Kakheti. The same village holds another church, of Saint Nino, about a kilometre to the north-east: Saint Nino is considered the enlightener of Georgia, and the principal place of her veneration, Bodbe monastery, stands to the north near Sighnaghi.
The grounds are open around the clock and the church can be approached at any time. The road crosses the steppe and part of it is unpaved, so drive in dry weather. Dress with shoulders and knees covered.
