The Saint George salotsavi in Chinari is arranged as a niche: a place of prayer without a separate building. Candles are placed inside and small offerings are left, and the niche itself is usually built of stone.
Chinari lies in the southeast of Kakheti, in Dedoplistskaro Municipality, where steppe gradually pushes out the vineyards. The nearest church is marked in Arkhiloskalo, about two and a half kilometres away. Summers here are dry and very hot, and winters are open to the winds.
Some mountain shrines carry local restrictions on entry, so check them on the spot. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Allow no more than half an hour for the visit.
- Bring water, as there are no kiosks nearby.
- Loud conversation is not welcome here.
Getting there
- Navigate by the coordinates, as there may be no signs on the approach.
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
