The church of Saint George stands in the middle part of Matani, the village with the largest number of church buildings in the area: about nine here.
Such density is explained by the size of Matani and its position in the foothills: the settlement stretches along the river, and old church buildings remain in its different parts, from Damasti in the lower part to Akhali Khati and Bzianebi in the west. The village lies west of Akhmeta, and to the north the climb begins towards the Pankisi valley and on to the Tusheti passes.
A village church may keep no fixed schedule; service times are learned on site. To walk all the church sites of Matani, allow half a day. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women.
