The site is known as Didbatoni, which literally means the great lord. In the Georgian tradition such names often belong to revered places tied not to a particular saint but to local tradition, and this is more a shrine than a parish church.
What exactly lies behind the term cannot be said: no dedication has attached to the site. Matani counts about nine church sites, more than any other village in the area, and among them is a place similar in spirit, Akhali Khati in the western part, whose name translates as new icon. The village lies west of Akhmeta, stretched along the river.
The site can be approached freely and keeps no schedule. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, treat the structure with care, and speak quietly on the grounds.
