The church stands in Eniseli and is known by two names: it is called both Shikhiani and a Marian church. Most likely Shikhiani is a local name for the locality while the dedication belongs to the Virgin, but no final choice can be made between them, so both versions are in use.
Eniseli lies in the north of the Alazani valley, north-east of Kvareli, right at the foot of the Caucasus range. The village is known for wine-making: its vineyards yield one of the recognisable Kakhetian wines. To the west, in Shilda, stand four church buildings, and to the north the climb into the foothills begins.
The church keeps no fixed schedule; service times are learned on site. It stands away from the main village street. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women, and speak quietly on the grounds.
