The Kachalauri architectural complex brings together several structures on one site. In the Kakhetian foothills such groups usually formed around a church, to which a wall, a belfry and service rooms were added over time.
Kachalauri is part of Akhmeta Municipality and lies in the same chain of foothill villages as Matani and Khevischala. Almost half the population of Kakheti comes from the mountain regions, and in Akhmeta Municipality this is especially noticeable. The roads between villages here are short but winding.
Enter quietly if the door is open, and do not disturb those at prayer. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Combine the visit with neighbouring villages to save time.
- Bring a torch if it is dark inside.
- There is no need to touch candles or icons.
Getting there
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
