Of all the sanctuaries of Cheremi this one carries the most weight: the church is called not merely a church but an episcopal cathedral, that is a see. Such a designation is rare for a rural site and explains a good deal: where a see once stood, a whole circle of parishes usually grew around it.
Cheremi is indeed one of the densest villages in Kakheti: more than a dozen churches stand here, from this cathedral to a family salotsavi and a prayer niche at a former church site. The village lies south-east of Sagarejo, at the foot of the Gombori range, over which the pass road to Telavi runs.
The cathedral is active and getting inside is usually possible. The rules are the usual ones but worth observing more carefully than in a small village church: covered shoulders and knees, quiet, no photography during a service. Sixty metres away stands the prayer house of Kozma and Damiane, and it makes sense to see them together.
