The church of the Ascension stands in Bodbiskhevi, a village with an unusually large number of church buildings: about half a dozen here, from a chapel of the Transfiguration to a basilica of Cyricus and Julitta, scattered across different ends of the village.
The name Bodbiskhevi reads roughly as the Bodbe ravine and points to a link with the Bodbe area. But the monastery of Bodbe itself, known as the resting place of Saint Nino, stands elsewhere near Sighnaghi and should not be confused with it. The village stretches along the road south-west of Sighnaghi, so its churches are easily covered in one route from north to south.
The church keeps no fixed schedule, which does not mean the doors are always locked: for a village parish a visit is usually arranged in advance or timed to the Sunday service. Dress with shoulders and knees covered and keep quiet on the grounds.
