The mosque carries the name of Abu Bakr As-Siddik, the first rightly guided caliph and closest companion of the Prophet. This is another mosque of Duisi and the most visited Muslim building of the Pankisi valley.
The old mosque of the same village stands about three hundred metres away. The Kist community lives in Duisi, descendants of Vainakh settlers, and Islam is as much a part of everyday life in the valley as Orthodoxy is in the neighbouring lowland villages. Further up the valley, in Jokolo, a mosque and an Orthodox church stand some hundred and fifty metres apart.
This is an active mosque: shoes are removed at the entrance, clothing should be covered, and women need a headscarf. It is better to come outside prayer times, and photography is asked about with the community in advance. The grounds are open at any hour.
