The church of Saint George in Jokolo is notable above all for its neighbour: the village mosque stands some hundred and fifty metres away, and both buildings serve one village of the Pankisi valley.
Pankisi is populated by the Kist community, descendants of Vainakh settlers, and the Orthodox church here serves the smaller part of the residents. This is a rare sight in Georgia and worth seeing in person. Further down the valley lies Duisi, the largest village of Pankisi, where two more mosques are active, an old one and a new one. From here the road runs north towards the foothills of the Caucasus range.
The doors are opened during daylight. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women, and speak quietly on the grounds. If you plan to see the mosque too, remember it keeps its own rules: shoes are removed at the entrance.
