The mosque stands in Jokolo, a village of the Pankisi valley where the Kist community lives, descendants of Vainakh settlers. The most striking thing here is geographical: some hundred and fifty metres away stands the Orthodox church of Saint George, and both buildings serve one village and the same neighbours.
In Pankisi this is not an exception but the ordinary order of things, and seeing such proximity in person says more than reading about it. Jokolo lies above Duisi, where two more mosques are active, an old one and a new one. The valley runs north towards the foothills of the Caucasus range, narrowing as it climbs.
This is an active prayer building: shoes are removed at the entrance, clothing should be covered, and women need a headscarf. It is better to come outside prayer times, and photography is asked about with the community in advance.
