A parish church of Saint George, the church of the upper half of the village. The prefix zeda means here what it means in a dozen other villages of this belt: the upper part of a settlement, raised along the slope.
Zeda Beretisa lies in eastern Imereti, in the hills between Chiatura and Sachkhere. The lower half of the village has its own church with a different dedication, to Saint Nicholas, and this is a convenient case for seeing how church life works in a divided village: two parishes run in parallel about a kilometre apart. The century of building is not established.
The parish is rural, services are infrequent and there is no tourist flow. The roads are unpaved, so plan the trip for dry weather. Dress modestly, women wear a headscarf.
