A parish church of Saint George known by the name Kvashveti. The name goes back to the legend of Saint David of Gareji and the words kva shva, a stone was born. The same root lies behind the name of the Akhshani church in Kakheti and behind the Tbilisi Kashveti: the legend travelled across the country and settled into place names hundreds of kilometres from its origin.
Kursebi is not a village but a settlement grown up around coal workings north of Kutaisi, on the road to Tkibuli. The church stands in the residential part, among former miners quarters. Besides it the settlement holds a second Saint George church further south and a monastery of the Mother of God. The century of building is not established.
The parish is active and services follow the church year. Dress modestly, women wear a headscarf. The settlement has two churches with the same dedication, so it is worth confirming which one you want beforehand.
