A village church of the Ascension of the Saviour. In Georgian the feast is called amaghleba, from a verb meaning to raise or lift up. It falls on the fortieth day after Easter and in the rural calendar marks the turn towards summer work, which is why churches with this dedication are fairly numerous in western Georgia.
Okhomira is a small village in the Imeretian foothills north of Kutaisi. Another church of the village is also an Ascension one, known as the Gogolashvili church, and stands about two and a half kilometres away, so it is worth knowing before you set out which of the two you are heading for. The date of building is not established.
The parish is rural and there are no regular services. Dress modestly, women wear a headscarf; if the doors are locked, ask about the time in the village.
