Tsitelmta is built from two transparent roots: tsiteli, red, and mta, mountain. The Red Mountain is a name usually given to rises with outcrops of reddish clay or iron-bearing rock.
Such slopes do occur in western Georgia, and the toponym proves more precise than any description. The village lies south of Ozurgeti, in the same group as Dvabzu and Shemokmedi, so three or four sites here are easy to combine into one short route through the foothills.
No dating has become attached to the building. St. George remains the most frequent dedication in Guria too, and his day, Giorgoba, is kept twice a year. Dress soberly, women bring a headscarf.
