Shemokmedi is one of the best-known names in Gurian church geography, so one thing should be clear at once: this is a separate church at Gorisferdi, not the main monastic complex of the village. These are different sites and should not be confused.
Gorisferdi is built from the roots gora, hill, and perdi, slope: the slope of the hill, which describes the position of the church precisely. The village itself lies south-east of Ozurgeti, and it holds several church sites spread across different parts.
Neither a date nor a dedication has become attached to the building. The climb to the church runs up the slope, so wear closed shoes. Dress soberly and treat the walls with care.
