The Vaishnava temple in Sokhumi is a religious sight rare for Abkhazia, a living centre of the Vaishnava (Krishnaite) tradition. Against the Orthodox cathedrals and ancient basilicas of the coast, this place opens another, less expected side of the city’s spiritual map.
The temple stands in the eastern part of Sokhumi, away from the main streets and tourist routes. The community gathers here for shared practices, chanting and the feasts of its own calendar; the atmosphere is intimate, a working meeting place rather than a museum piece.
Guests are received kindly: shoes are left at the entrance, dress is modest, and ongoing practices are treated with respect. On feast days vegetarian dishes are offered, and one may simply drop in for a talk and some quiet.
