The Catholic parish of St. Simon the Canaanite is a working Roman Catholic community in the very centre of Sokhumi. For a traveller it is an unexpected page of the city’s spiritual heritage: next to the Orthodox cathedral and the Lutheran church a true quarter of three confessions has formed here.
The parish unites the Catholics of Sokhumi and guests who find themselves in Abkhazia; the building is modest yet alive: the community keeps it in order and welcomes visitors. All three churches of the quarter, the cathedral, the Lutheran church and the Catholic parish, are easily seen in one unhurried walk from the seafront.
Services are held in an intimate, almost homely setting, and they are treated with care: entering during mass, one sits quietly by the door, dresses modestly and takes photos only outside worship.
