The Lutheran church of St. John is a small kirche in the centre of Sokhumi and a living monument to the history of the city’s German community. The modest building is easy to walk past, which makes finding it the more rewarding: one of the most unexpected religious sights of the Abkhazian capital.
The kirche stands door to door with the Roman Catholic parish, and a couple of hundred metres away rises the Annunciation Cathedral: a quarter of three confessions, rare for the whole coast. All three churches are covered in half an hour of unhurried walking from the seafront.
The community is active to this day: the kirche lives by services and meetings. Guests enter freely, keeping simple courtesy: a quiet voice, modest dress and no photos during worship; outside service hours one may look around at leisure.
