The Annunciation Cathedral is the main working church of Sokhumi and a notable religious sight of the Abkhazian capital. The building was raised at the start of the twentieth century by the efforts of the town’s Greek community, and the hand of Greek church architecture still shows in its look: strict forms, a light volume, a dome above a crossing of quiet streets.
The cathedral stands in the central part of the city, a few blocks from the seafront, and a walk along the sea naturally continues into the spiritual heritage. Right beside it a whole quarter of three confessions has formed: the Lutheran church of St. John and the Roman Catholic parish work door to door, so three very different churches are seen within half an hour.
The cathedral lives by the full church calendar: regular services are held, a choir sings, and on great feasts nearly the whole city gathers. Guests need only modest dress and quiet; during worship one does not walk about or take photos.
