Uplistsikhe — a history of 3 thousand years
12 km east of the city of Gori, there is an architectural attraction beloved by tourists: the cave city of Uplistsikhe. The city is amazing in that having arisen 1000 years before our era, it was residential until the middle of the XIX century.
Cave cities are popular settlements of ancient Georgia: reliable natural protection from numerous enemies and the relative comfort of the inhabitants' everyday life.
The sacred temple city was conquered by the Abkhazians at various times, captured by the Arabs, and burned by the Mongols. Unwilling to accept Orthodoxy, the cult city stood in opposition to Mtskheta and was defeated.
Now the Uplistsikhe cave complex is a paid tourist object. Here you can stay at a camping site with a spring and places for tents — to live in a city that has no analogues on Earth.
