Peter's Fortress City
In the village of Tsikhisdziri near the city of Batumi, on a hill near the seashore, there is an ancient fortress city of Peter. The ancient Byzantine fortress is a structure that resembles giant steps, densely shrouded in ivy and brambles.
The founder of the ancient city was the Byzantine ruler, Emperor Justinian I (VI century).
The defensive structure was built precisely on the trade route that connected the Armenian, Persian and Byzantine territories with the western part of Georgia.
The fortress, namely its central part, was built on a steep cliff, which made it inaccessible from the sea route.
On the land side, the structure was protected by rocks and stones. Hence the name "Petra", translated from Greek means "stone, rock". The
name of the city "Gareji" is an enchanted fortress. She proved invincible to the enemies.
