Svetitskhoveli Temple — 1000-year History of Orthodox Georgia
Each temple has its own history. The Georgian tsar built the Svetitskhoveli temple, destroyed the Mongolian one, and restored the Russian one.
Orthodoxy in Georgia began in Mtskheta, the ancient capital, and the Svetitskhoveli Temple is the first cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
The royal family of Bagrationi, who gave Georgia and Russia grand dukes, tsars and generals, rests here.
For services to the history of Christian Georgia, the temple was awarded the title of “UNESCO World Heritage Monument".
