Cultural heritage of Georgia. The administrative center of Kakheti - the Legendary plane tree and the Lord's Fortress. Historical information about this city.
Telavi, one of the most ancient cities in Georgia, has many attractions. The blog "MadLoba" gives a short overview of the main places that you must visit: the legendary plane tree and the "Fortress of the Lord", will tell the history, architecture and infrastructure of the city
Telavi is considered one of the most ancient cities in Georgia. It is located in Kakheti, in the Alazani Valley. Some sources claim that Telavi was founded in the 1st-2nd century AD. However, in officially recognized sources, the history of the city begins in the 8th century.
The first fortress in these parts was built at that time. According to one legend, the city of Telavi owes its appearance to... the Armenians. Allegedly, in ancient times, Armenian guides who fled from the Turks and Mongols came to the Georgian king and asked him to allow them to settle in the Georgian kingdom. He, having nothing against it, sent envoys to choose a place for settlement.
They walked for quite a long time and eventually found themselves in the Alazani Valley. Being struck by the beauty of the surrounding nature, one of the Armenians could not resist exclaiming "it's nice here!", which in Armenian sounds like "te lav". Thus, after some time, Telavi appeared.
In the vicinity and on the territory of Telavi there are quite a lot of attractions and cultural and historical monuments with a rich past.
A unique Telavi Kremlin,Batonis Tsikhe Fortress. Built in the 17th century. The reason for its construction was unrest. And the name is translated from Georgian as "the lord's fortress".
Telavi plane tree is a local artifact. The height is about 40 meters and the girth of the tree trunk is more than 12 meters. How old it is is not exactly known, but local residents claim that it is about 900. When visiting this place in groups, tourists, holding hands, try to embrace the tree trunk, hoping that their wish will certainly come true.
The Telavi market deserves a special mention. Tourists who have visited it note the quality of the goods, a good selection and reasonable prices.
