Shemokmedi: a Medieval Shrine in Guria
The Shemokmedi Monastery was renowned in Georgia for its wealth: it boasted a large library, valuable icons, and ecclesiastical artifacts. Most of these items were locally sourced, while some were brought from other parts of Georgia, primarily from Samtskhe-Saatabago.
The Shemokmedi monastery complex is located on a low mountain in Guria, on the left bank of the Bzhuzha River, 8 km southeast of the town of Ozurgeti, in the village of Shemokmedi. The monastery is the ancestral burial vault of the Gurieli family and local bishops.
The church in Shemokmedi was built in the Middle Ages as a chapel and burial vault for the appanage rulers of Guria (the Gurieli family). The church has been rebuilt several times. According to art historians, it was originally a single-nave church, with the side aisles added later, transforming it into a basilica. It was probably around this time that the walls were renovated, clad in a checkerboard pattern of colored stones. The church has two entrances in the eastern part: a portal in the center, and to the right of it, in the corner of the cathedral, arched doors.

The interior murals, including wall paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as Georgian and Greek inscriptions on the frescoes, have survived. The complex consists of three architectural monuments: a medieval basilica, the domed Zarzma Church attached to it, and a 16th-century bell tower, restored in 1831. Monastery buildings of various purposes are also located here.
The Zarzma Church of the Transfiguration adjoins the Church of the Savior on the south side. Vakhtang I Gurieli built the Church of the Transfiguration in the 16th century to commemorate the arrival of the Transfiguration icon from Zarzma Monastery (hence the name "Zarzma"). Legend has it that after the Turkish invasion of Zarzma, icons and church treasures were tied to a bull and were to be left wherever the bull stopped. It stopped in Shemokmedi. Therefore, the Church of the Transfiguration was built near the Church of the Savior. Over the centuries, the Shemokmedi monastery complex was repeatedly destroyed and devastated. Currently, it houses a bishop's see and a monastery.
