Mestia, Svaneti: Svan Towers, Museum and Mountain Ski Resorts
Mestia, home to approximately 3,000 people, is a true cultural and tourist center of mountainous Svaneti. The village is located at an altitude of 1,500 meters on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. Zugdidi, the closest town to Mestia, is 128 km away.
Svaneti is a unique region of Georgia; even the language is slightly different. Historically, there have been no major military conflicts in this area, and the change of eras and rulers has had little impact on the local culture and traditions.
Sights of Mestia
Mestia and other mountain villages boast preserved medieval stone houses and traditional Svan towers from the 9th to 11th centuries. The Mestia Historical and Ethnographic Museum houses unique artifacts: manuscripts, icons, and other items that tell the story of Svan life, culture, and traditions.
Also noteworthy is the house-museum of M.V. Khergiani, a world-famous mountain climber. Nearby, at an altitude of 2,060–2,200 meters, lies the commune of Ushguli, considered the highest village in Europe. The community's ancient temples and ancestral towers are architectural monuments and are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
At the heart of high-altitude tourism
Near Mestia are two ski resorts – Tetnuldi and Hatsvali. Both experienced skiers and beginners feel comfortable here. From Mestia, climbers launch their expeditions to the peaks of Shkhara, Ushba, Dzhangi-tau, the Chalaadi Glacier, and others. Hiking and horseback riding trails to glaciers, waterfalls, and mountain lakes begin in Mestia.
It doesn't matter whether you come here in summer or winter. Mestia welcomes tourists year-round. There are many hotels and guesthouses. Information center staff can help you choose a trekking route, guide you on the ski slopes, and tell you about local attractions. The unique beauty of the pristine nature and historical monuments leave a lasting impression on anyone who visits Mestia.
Minibuses run from Zugdidi to Mestia, but they leave when full and do not wait for the train from Tbilisi.
