Sami (Samni): a Medieval Fortress in Samtskhe-Javakheti

Georgia's landmarks are located throughout its territory. The Samtskhe-Javakheti region is rich in architectural monuments. In the village of Rveli, you can visit the Sami (Samni) Fortress. It stands in a picturesque location on the ridge of the Baniskhevi Gorge, on the left bank of the Mtkvari River.

The fortress's grandeur and unforgettable scenery will leave tourists with a magnificent impression. It is a rectangular structure with rounded corners. The impost allows access throughout the fortress, but there is no access from the castle in the northern part of the fortress.

The citadel is constructed of cobblestones, carefully selected to fit the shape. The northern impost is accessed through an entrance with horizontal lintels. The fortress's interior walls are shaped like the façade walls. On the southwest side of the building is a 7-centimeter-wide ceramic chimney.

If you're unsure what to see in the Borjomi area, you'll definitely be impressed by the fortress, built during the middle feudal period. The Sami citadel stands in a strategically convenient location, which was crucial for defense against enemies.

How to get there

Georgia's most beautiful places are located in the Borjomi Municipality, on the banks of the Mtkvari River, in the village of Rveli. The drive is short, as a paved road leads to this location. From Borjomi, it's a 7-kilometer drive, followed by a 1-kilometer walk to the fortress itself.
