Petra Fortress in Borjomi: History, Photos, Route
We're all interested in the stories of our ancestors: how they lived, what hardships they endured. Georgia's landmarks offer vivid examples of all sorts of trials and tribulations throughout history, as well as the country's most beautiful places.
When choosing a vacation spot, consider this wonderful country; it offers plenty to see and visit. One of Georgia's most striking landmarks is the Petre Fortress.
Location
This fortress is located on a high mountain on the right bank of the river, near the village of Likani, in the Borjomi region. The building is considered a historical monument of Georgia.
Petre Fortress's inclusion among the most beautiful places in Georgia is truly deserved. Just imagine the view from the fortress. The river, sheltered by tree branches, the reflection of its water – it's simply a fairy tale, not reality. You won't even notice how you'll be completely immersed in the allure of this place.

History
The fortress was originally called Kverbilisi Tsikhe. Petre Fortress itself belonged to feudal lords, more specifically the Avalishvili family, and was passed down through generations. Its purpose was to protect the bridge over the Mktvari River and the route to the important settlements of Papa and Nua.
Petre Fortress later became an Ottoman administrative center in the sixteenth century, during the Tori conquests.
Description
The fortress included citadels and a lower courtyard, which was connected to the citadels. Various ruins of other ancient structures have been preserved within the interior and between the walls. Within the fortress itself are ruined complexes that no longer resemble residential buildings. The wall surrounding Petre contains embrasures and breastworks intended for military operations, such as archery. Restoration and repairs have been carried out numerous times, but the horizontal masonry of the original structure still remains.
I think you now know what to see in Georgia and are interested in spending your vacation there. A visit to Petra Fortress will recharge you with a tremendous amount of strength and energy, inspiration and peace; you'll never forget the time you spend here.
