Places worth visiting in Georgia. Abuli Fortress.
The village of Abuli is the highest mountain village in those parts, the fortress of Abuli was built about five thousand years ago. The fortress was built without the use of mortar, from large rough stones that were demolished by old glaciers. The Abuli fortress complex consists of a fence, a fortress, and forty low-rise buildings for various purposes.
In Georgia, megalithic fortresses were called "The Abode of Heroes", "the dwelling of Devi" (Devi – in Georgia. folklore is a giant spirit). Megalithic or cyclopean fortresses are found mainly in Young Georgia – in Триалети и Javakheti plateau. Although they are in small numbers in Abkhazia and in the historical Lazeti (currently the territory of Turkey).
Abuli - vthe highest mountain village in the Akhalkalaki municipality. The name "Abuli" goes back to the Persian word "ab", ("ab" - water, "abuli" - a watery place").
The name of Obuli is also borne by: the two highest mountains of Javakheti and the plateaus of the Abu l Samara range - Didi (big) and Patara (small) Abuli, lake, river and cyclopean fortress on Mount Patara Abuli.
Mount Didi Abuli (height 3,303 m) is the oldest extinct volcano. On the slopes of the mountain in large numbers there are moraine accumulations and small lakes. Didi Abuli Abuli Patara adjoins from the south (2,800 m) On the slope of this mountain, at an altitude of 2,670 meters above sea level, there are the ruins of an ancient cyclopean fortress, which still impresses with its size, power, inaccessibility, strategic location.
The fortress is about 5 thousand years old, built by means of dry masonry (without mortar) of huge rough stones. The complex consists of a fence, an inner fortress, and 40 two- and three-storey outbuildings for various purposes. The height of the walls reaches five meters, the width is three meters. The area of the inner territory of the fortress is about 2,400 m2.
For the construction of the fortress, large stones ("stones of the sea"), demolished by old glaciers, were used. Some blocks also serve to cover underground shelters: narrow, low-entry shelters of round or square shape are arranged using engineering technologies: there is a plumbing and air-permeable system. These shelters fit so well into the surrounding space that it was almost impossible to detect the entrance there in the mass of a large number of huge stones. Numerous stone boxes-graves were found around the fortress.
