Mariamoba: Dormition of the Theotokos and Georgian Traditions
At the same time joyful and sorrowful, this holiday is celebrated by Georgians every year on August 28. It is the day of remembrance of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, called Mariamoba in Georgia. According to tradition, it was on this day that the Mother of God passed away and was reunited in heaven with her Son.
The Legend of the Death of the Virgin Mary
After Jesus Christ ascended, the Virgin Mary constantly prayed that her soul would be received into the Kingdom of Heaven. During one of her prayers, the heavens opened before her, and the Archangel Gabriel told her that soon her soul would ascend to heaven.
The Virgin Mary’s last wish was to see all the apostles gathered together and say farewell to each of them. The Lord approved her wish and brought together all the apostles who were in different countries preaching the Word of God. The first apostle to appear before Mary was Paul, and then the others came, with the exception of the Apostle Thomas, since he was in India. Mary praised them for their teachings and bid farewell to each of them. After that, at about 9 p.m., a bright light filled the room, marking the departure of the Virgin Mary into the Kingdom of Heaven. The pure soul of the Virgin Mary ascended to heaven accompanied by the wondrous singing of angels.
After the ascension of the Virgin Mary, the eleven apostles prayed all night, and her house was filled with a marvelous fragrance. According to the Virgin Mary’s wish, she was buried in Gethsemane. Everyone who came to venerate the relics of the Virgin Mary was miraculously healed, for she possessed an incredible healing power. The Apostle Thomas, who had not managed to say farewell to Mary, later visited her tomb. However, he discovered that her body had disappeared, leaving behind a beautiful fragrance. Thus, Christ took the body of the Virgin Mary into heaven.

How Georgians Celebrate the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God
On this day, services and liturgies are held in all Orthodox churches across the country. From early morning, believers come to church to pray and to remember the legends and stories connected with the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God.
After the church services, parishioners return home and spend the rest of the day at a family feast with traditional national dishes and, of course, ever-present Georgian wine.
Mariamoba is especially revered in Georgia, as it is believed that this land is under the special protection of the Virgin Mary. Ancient Iberia was among the first countries to hear the word of God.

This annual celebration takes place on August 28th and is observed throughout Georgia with great enthusiasm. The festivities often include religious processions, traditional music and dance performances, colorful parades, and various culinary delights.
Mariamoba holds deep historical roots, tracing back to the Christianization of Georgia in the 4th century. The holiday became particularly prominent during the reign of Queen Tamar, one of the most influential rulers in Georgian history. Queen Tamar was known for her devout faith in the Virgin Mary, and Mariamoba became a symbol of her reign.
During the celebrations, Georgian Orthodox Christians attend special church services dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Many people also make pilgrimages to significant religious sites such as the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta or the Ghvtismshobeli Church in Kutaisi.
The festivities extend beyond religious activities, as Georgians embrace their cultural heritage. Traditional Georgian dances, such as the lively Kartuli and graceful Acharuli, are performed in the streets, accompanied by the melodious sounds of folk music played on traditional instruments like the panduri and chonguri.
Food also plays a central role during Mariamoba. Families and friends gather for lavish feasts, where traditional Georgian dishes like khachapuri (cheese-filled bread) and khinkali (dumplings) are served. These feasts foster a sense of togetherness and celebration among the community.
Mariamoba is a cherished holiday that unites Georgians in their devotion to the Virgin Mary and their cultural identity. It serves as a reminder of the country's Christian heritage and offers an opportunity to celebrate its rich traditions through joyous festivities that continue to thrive in modern-day Georgia.
