A parish church of Saint George, the commonest dedication in Georgia: the saint is honoured here twice a year, in spring and in late autumn, and almost the whole folk calendar is built around his name. The word Khopi is added to the church name, the locality it is historically tied to.
The church belongs to Baghdati but stands not in the dense town but on its eastern edge, where the streets give way to orchards and vineyards. One clarification is worth making at once: this is not the Khobi monastery in Samegrelo, a famous monument with an entirely different history. The names are alike only to the ear, and half of western Georgia lies between them.
The parish is active and services follow the church year. Dress modestly, women wear a headscarf, and during a service it is better not to walk between the congregation and the altar.
