The Bakhtrioni church stands at the foot of the fortress of the same name north of Akhmeta, above the Alazani valley. The name carries weight here: the Bakhtrioni uprising of sixteen fifty-nine became a symbol of Kakhetiโs resistance, and Vazha-Pshavelaโs poem Bakhtrioni fixed it in Georgian literature for good.
The parish church by the fortress meanwhile lives the ordinary life of a parish. The Bakhtrioni ensemble counts several churches: higher up, within the fortress walls, stands another church, the small Muni church is nearby, and by the road there is a fourth, Khorbalo.
One enters freely, with the usual courtesy of a working church: modest dress, a headscarf for women, silence during a service. A round of the whole ensemble with the climb to the fortress takes about an hour.
