The sports history museum gathers medals, kit, equipment, photographs and documents that trace the sporting history of the country. Georgian sport rests on several strong schools, from wrestling and weightlifting to football and basketball, and a collection like this makes those lines visible at once. The format is intimate, shown and explained in person.
The museum is on Ivane Javakhishvili street in the Chugureti district, not far from the Mtkvari embankment. The block is residential, with last century buildings and quiet courtyards. Several other town museums are nearby and can be covered on foot.
The collection is intimate and half an hour is enough. Weekdays and the first half of the day are the easier times. Combine the trip with a walk through Chugureti and the other museums of the district.
Tips
- Ask about wrestling and weightlifting, the strongest part here
- Combine the visit with a walk through Chugureti
- Come on weekdays, small museums are more often closed at weekends
How to get there
- About ten minutes on foot from Marjanishvili metro station
