The Taras Shevchenko Square is particularly noteworthy due to the monument to the same Taras Shevchenko, a Ukrainian poet and prose writer, an artist.
For Georgia, 2007 became the year of Ukraine. And in honor of this, in the early spring of 2007, a monument to the outstanding Ukrainian writer and poet Taras Shevchenko was opened in Tbilisi.
The opening of the monument took place in the presence of the President of Ukraine – Viktor Yushchenko. The sculpture project was developed and executed on the territory of Ukraine by experienced craftsmen, the Georgian side only determined the location of the monument.
On the writer's birthday, a large Ukrainian diaspora gathers near his monument. Ukrainian schools of Georgia hold a competition for readers of the author's works. Later, a festive concert is held near the monument.
