The church of the Mother of God stands in Variani village of Gori Municipality. The parish here is a large one: Variani is one of the bigger villages on the plain between Gori and Kareli.
The village lies on the right bank of the Kura, away from the main road, among fields and orchards. A convent of the Virgin is active in Ruisi to the west, and the Urbnisi Sioni stands south across the river.
Regular services may not be held, and the church can be approached at any time. Modest clothing is appropriate, and candles and offerings are left in their places.
