The church of Surb Astvatsatsin stands in Tskhinvali and belongs to the Armenian Apostolic tradition. The name translates as Holy Mother of God, the Armenian way of naming churches of the Virgin Mary.
Tskhinvali lies in the valley of the Great Liakhvi, at the northern edge of Shida Kartli, where the plain gives way to the Caucasus foothills. A church of St. George is also active in the town.
The town lies beyond the dividing line. A route here is planned in advance, against the access rules in force.
