The church of St. Nicholas stands on the southern side of Tskhinvali. In Georgian the saint is called Nikoloz, and churches in his name stand all over the country.
The town lies in the valley of the Great Liakhvi, where the plain gives way to the Caucasus foothills. From this church it is a couple of kilometres along the river to the town centre.
The town lies beyond the dividing line. A route here is planned in advance, against the access rules in force.
