The Surb Astvatsatsin church is dedicated to the Holy Mother of God: that is how her name sounds in Armenian. The name points to Mets Samsari, the Greater one, while the shrine itself stands by Patara Samsari, the Lesser, so both villages are named side by side.
The Samsari villages lie on the Javakheti plateau northeast of Akhalkalaki, at the foot of the volcanic Samsari range. Open pastures and stony fields surround them.
Services follow the community calendar; at other times the doors may be locked. Guests are asked to dress modestly.
