This Armenian Apostolic church was built recently and stands near Ikhtila. New Armenian churches in Javakheti are put up where a community is growing or where an older building has not survived.
A cult site called Megreki is marked about a kilometre away. Ikhtila lies in Akhalkalaki Municipality, where the overwhelming majority of residents are Armenian. The area is high and open, swept by winds from the upland in winter.
A headscarf is useful for women, as it may be required at the entrance. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Allow no more than half an hour for the visit.
- Bring water, as there are no kiosks nearby.
- It is better to leave a dog outside.
Getting there
- Navigate by the coordinates, as there may be no signs on the approach.
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
