The church is known by the local name of Ermisa. It is a modest village building of local stone: simple proportions, a minimum of decoration, and an appearance noticeably older than that of the Catholic church nearby.
Arali shows the religious mosaic of Samtskhe-Javakheti in miniature. The Catholic church of St. Joseph stands barely a hundred and fifty metres away, and higher up the slope rises another church of the village, Shuaseri. Such closeness of two traditions in one small village is a feature of this region in particular, rare in the rest of Georgia.
The village lies north of Akhaltsikhe, away from the main road, and there is no tourist traffic here. Dress soberly and treat the walls with care.
